“Every so often, we encounter a visual impression that stirs something timeless within us, a memory, a whisper of inspiration, a glimmer of something just beyond our current reach. The images in the In the Spirit Print Collection are my way of capturing those fleeting moments.” Gail hopes they offer you an emotional connection, a doorway into wonder, and a reminder of the beauty that exists beyond the ordinary.
Some of the prints in this series are created using a historic hand-coloring technique, a method she has adapted into her own expressive language. Beginning with black and white or sepia-toned photography, she applies layers of oil-based color with care and intuition, then removes color selectively to reveal a story beneath. The process is tactile and meditative, less about staying true to reality and more about expressing the emotional resonance of a moment.
This traditional technique, first made famous by photographers like Matthew Brady during the Civil War, has endured for generations. Gail continues that lineage today in her Taos studio, producing each fine art print as a pigment ink print on archival paper, using Epson printing technology and a curated selection of high-quality fine art papers.
Whether you’re drawn to photography for its detail or the emotional space it creates, the In the Spirit Collection offers something timeless: a quiet invitation to reflect, remember, and reconnect with what matters most.
From the crumbling steps of a jungle-guarded temple to the quiet serenity of a Buddhist shrine, this collection of architectural prints invites viewers into places where stone holds memory and structure becomes a vessel for spirit. Gail Russell’s travels to ancient sites in Sri Lanka, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Mexico were never just about seeing; they were about listening. These photographs are her offerings, evidence of sacred energy still alive in the land, of reverence etched into form, and of mystery that needs no explanation to be felt.
Rooted in Gail Russell’s long-standing exploration of soul, story, and sacred energy, this collection of spiritual artwork invites you to move beyond the visual and feel the breath of a dancer, the wisdom of an elephant, the tenderness of a prayer, or the clarity of crystal light. Each image is a doorway into the unseen, a visual echo of something remembered just beneath the surface of waking life. Through color, shape, and stillness, these photographs become quiet companions for reflection and meditation, reminding us that spirit lives not only in the grand and celestial but also in the simple, the grounded, and the everyday.
